The WAVE Stack: Matrix Robotics Pitches General-Purpose Humanoids at WAIC 2026

Shanghai's World Artificial Intelligence Conference has become a proving ground for humanoids that must switch tasks without switching robots.

At WAIC 2026 (July 17–20), Matrix Robotics ran live demonstrations of its third-generation MATRIX-3 general-purpose humanoid—four units on the floor, identical hardware, one shared WAVE physical-world foundation model, and scene changes that jumped from retail service to entertainment to bipedal walking.

The company also announced a WAVE model upgrade, expanded its RAAS ecosystem partner program, and launched the MATRIX Global Partner Program for international distribution.

Hardware built for contact, not demos

MATRIX-3 stands 1.70 meters tall and weighs 65 kg, sized to human environments. Matrix highlights a 27-DOF tendon-driven dexterous hand, biomimetic safety skin, and distributed tactile sensing with 0.1N fingertip precision. The firm claims four hours of continuous stable operation.

Pricing starts at RMB 580,000. Matrix reports cumulative orders approaching 1,000 units and cites pilot deployments in chain catering, hospitality, and tourism. Its Zhangjiang MFH manufacturing base targets 5,000 units in 2026 and 10,000 in 2027.

WAVE as the generalization bet

WAVE is marketed as a physical-world foundation model with a brain–cerebellum split. WAIC demos stressed task migration—the same robot brain re-targeting new skills without per-scene fine-tuning.

That narrative competes with Western stacks that still ship mostly bespoke task pipelines, and rhymes with China's July push on open-weight frontier models.

Global partners and RAAS

The MATRIX Global Partner Program signals export ambition alongside Matrix's domestic RAAS network.

For buyers, the due-diligence list is familiar: verify uptime outside expo halls, measure hand reliability on unstructured objects, and read service contracts for firmware update ownership when WAVE revs mid-deployment.

Why WAIC mattered

Matrix backed WAIC's "Intelligent Partners" theme with concurrent demos rather than static mannequins. The open question for 2026 H2 is whether 580,000-yuan generalists outsell specialized arms when tasks rotate hourly.

Either way, July established MATRIX-3 as a reference design because it showed multi-task continuity on a single foundation model in public view.
