Universal Robots Gen 7 Targets Physical AI on the Factory Floor
At IMTS 2026 Universal Robots unveiled Gen 7, a redesigned cobot platform with native AI connectivity and an open partner stack for industrial physical AI deployments.
What changed
On 14 September 2026 at the IMTS tradeshow in Chicago, Teradyne Robotics company Universal Robots introduced Gen 7, its seventh generation collaborative robot platform. The release is an end to end redesign from controller to tool flange, positioned as out of the box AI ready for industrial operations.
Gen 7 ships with Scope X software that lets programmers build AI powered applications, connect external AI compute, and integrate machine vision partners. The platform supports additional packages for ProfiSafe, OPC UA, and third party application software from ecosystem partners including Cognex, Schunk, Robotiq, and Inbolt. Universal Robots cited more than 100,000 prior deployments and over 20 partner demos at IMTS illustrating physical AI, vision, and gripping on Gen 7 hardware.

Why it matters
Most factories still treat AI as a lab experiment bolted onto legacy automation. Universal Robots is betting that the integration tax, not arm mechanics, blocks physical AI adoption. A platform with standardized AI hooks and partner slots reduces time to first production deployment for integrators who cannot build custom middleware for every site.
For manufacturing leaders, Gen 7 is a signal that incumbent cobot vendors will compete on software openness and partner ecosystems, not payload charts alone.
Who is affected
Systems integrators and OT engineering teams evaluating cobot upgrades should compare Gen 7's Scope X connectivity against existing PLC and MES stacks. Vision and gripping vendors gain a consolidated on robot distribution channel. Humanoid startups face entrenched cobot incumbents moving AI native before humanoids reach reliable factory duty cycles.
What to do next
If you run collaborative cells today, ask your integrator for a Gen 7 migration map focused on one high variance task (vision guided pick, adaptive sanding, or inspection). Pilot on a line with measurable changeover pain rather than a greenfield demo cell.

What to watch
