Personal AGI Means Owning Your Skill Files Before Someone Else Does

At Startup School 2026 on August 6, Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan delivered a 42 minute keynote titled "Personal AGI Is How You Stay Under Your Own Power." This opinion draws on his public remarks and published transcript. Classy AI News did not conduct a private interview.

Tan framed the talk around Baruch Spinoza, excommunicated at 23, who ground optical lenses by day and wrote by night. The political question in 1673 and in 2026, Tan argued, is who commands your cognitive power. Personal AGI, in his framing, is an AI agent running on infrastructure you control, reading memory you own, and executing procedures you wrote.

Skill files beat platform rent

Tan distinguishes personal AGI from generic chatbots: model weights are a rented commodity, but accumulated context is the part nobody can copy. He described his own system as markdown files and scheduled jobs, estimating his output at roughly 400 times his 2013 baseline, a figure he defended as directionally honest rather than audited science.

The practical prescription: keep your brain and skills in a repository you control from day one, before any platform or acquirer has an opinion about it. When Spinoza died, Tan noted, they inventoried two pairs of pants, seven shirts, a lens lathe, 160 books, and the Ethics locked in a desk. "The desk drawer was his repo."

Why this matters now

Stripe's reported $7 billion OpenRouter acquisition and OpenAI's Multi Agents v2 routing update both point the same direction: model access is becoming a routing and payments problem, not a moat. Founders who outsource their workflows to platforms compound someone else's asset, not their own.

Tan closed with a line worth taking seriously even if you reject the AGI framing: "Own your skills before someone else does." In an era of agent swarms and alliance ultimatums, that is less philosophy than operational hygiene.
