Opinion: AGI headlines from this week's model launches are marketing rhythm, not governance evidence. Approval committees should demand eval plans and logging before they let flagship models touch production.

Within 48 hours, OpenAI's Greg Brockman welcomed reporters to the "AGI era" at a GPT 6 Astra briefing, Anthropic shipped Claude Fable 5.1 for general use alongside gated Mythos 5.1, and Google released its third Flash model in six weeks with a cyber specific variant under Fairwind access controls.
Each lab paired public capability claims with restricted tiers for exploit grade or life sciences work. The announcements are synchronized marketing beats, not independent scientific confirmations.
Why it matters
Opinion: AGI slogans are becoming a launch ritual. They help vendors frame inevitability, but they do not replace the verification gates responsible organizations already owe their customers and regulators.
If your committee treats a press briefing quote as evidence that models are safe to deploy broadly, you are outsourcing governance to marketing departments that compete on narrative velocity.
The harder work is unchanged: run task level evals on your data, log agent actions, and treat cyber capable models as controlled substances regardless of what stage name the vendor assigns.
