LUMI IQ Will Host Europe's First Logical Qubit Supercomputer
The LUMI AI Factory will integrate IQM's LUMI IQ superconducting system with logical qubits, staged from 2027 through 2029 inside Finland's hybrid HPC grid.
What changed
On 10 September 2026, the LUMI supercomputing consortium announced that the LUMI AI Factory will host Europe's first superconducting quantum computer designed from the start to operate with logical qubits. The system, named LUMI IQ, will be supplied by IQM Quantum Computers and hosted by CSC in Kajaani, Finland.
Delivery follows a staged roadmap: an IQM Halocene H4 system with 150 physical qubits and initial error correction capabilities in 2027, upgrades improving logical qubit reliability in 2028, and a Halocene H5 upgrade in 2029. Funding comes jointly from the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking and participating countries Finland, Czechia, Norway, and Poland.

Why it matters
Most public quantum roadmaps still sell physical qubit counts. LUMI IQ explicitly targets logical qubits integrated beside LUMI's AI and classical HPC resources, which changes how European researchers plan hybrid workflows rather than treating quantum as a standalone lab instrument. The phased install lets users gain experience with error corrected qubits as hardware matures instead of waiting for a single big bang delivery.
Who is affected
EuroHPC member R&D teams, cryptography and materials simulation groups, and vendors competing with trapped ion platforms need to compare hybrid access models, not chip specs alone.
What to do next
European teams with HPC allocations should register interest with EuroHPC partner centers now and map 2027 pilot workloads that benefit from co located classical, AI, and logical qubit resources.
What to watch
2027 Halocene H4 installation milestones, published logical qubit fidelity metrics after the 2028 upgrade, and whether other national HPC centers copy the co located logical qubit model.
