IonQ Superion 256 Will Be First QPU Inside NVIDIA Quantum Research Center
IonQ will install a Superion 256 system at NVIDIA Accelerated Quantum Research Center, linked to GB200 via NVQLink, a concrete hybrid quantum and GPU co design milestone for R&D planners.
What changed
IonQ announced on 23 September 2026 that its Superion 256 quantum computer will be the first on premise quantum processor deployed at the NVIDIA Accelerated Quantum Research Center (NVAQC). Installation is scheduled for next year.
The Superion 256 will connect directly to an NVIDIA GB200 NVL72 system through NVQLink, with workloads orchestrated by the open CUDA Q platform. IonQ introduced the sixth generation Superion platform on 8 September 2026. The system is available to order now with first customer deliveries expected in 2027.
The joint research program focuses on hybrid software development and large scale system prototyping, with open results intended to guide future AI use cases and quantum GPU co design.

Why it matters
Useful quantum workloads still depend on tight coupling with classical accelerators for error mitigation, compilation, and hybrid algorithms. A named QPU inside NVIDIA flagship research infrastructure signals that co located quantum and AI stacks are moving from slide decks to facility plans, which affects how national labs and enterprise R&D teams budget hybrid experiments.
Timothy Costa, NVIDIA director and general manager for accelerated computing, said IonQ Superion 256 at the center will help advance toward scientifically meaningful quantum supercomputers.
Who is affected
Quantum algorithm researchers, HPC procurement leads, IonQ and NVIDIA investors, and policy staff tracking domestic quantum manufacturing capacity.
What to do next
If your team runs variational or hybrid algorithms on cloud QPUs only, map which stages require GPU proximity. Use the NVAQC announcement as a trigger to ask vendors for NVQLink or equivalent co location roadmaps before renewing isolated QPU credits.
What to watch
Installation photos and published benchmarks from NVAQC, CUDA Q release notes referencing Superion workflows, and whether other vendors secure similar on premise slots at the center.
