Doped Clifford Sampling: IBM and UChicago Encode Verification Into the Quantum Advantage Claim

Quantum advantage claims have a credibility problem that classical computing never faced: once a calculation exceeds what conventional machines can verify, how do you trust the answer? IBM's August 3, 2026, news release frames three new experiments as steps toward "trusted quantum advantage".
Bill Fefferman, an associate professor at the University of Chicago, said in IBM's release: "Verification remains one of the biggest challenges in firmly establishing experimental quantum advantage."
The UChicago-IBM paper encoded a 70-qubit logical computation across 97 physical qubits, finishing in roughly 15 minutes while classical simulations would require impractical resources.
IBM placed all three partner papers on its Quantum Advantage Tracker for open community benchmarking.
