Semi Humanoid Pilots Beat Waiting for General Purpose Robots
Neubility's Billy semi humanoid and Evri's bipedal delivery trial show that narrow mobility plus manipulation pilots will commercialize before general purpose humanoids clear factory ROI.
What changed
South Korea's Neubility unveiled Billy, a semi humanoid with a wheeled base and dual five finger hands, on 29 September 2026 and said it will deploy units at CJ CheilJedang food plants within the year. Days earlier, UK carrier Evri began Europe's first two legged delivery robot trial in Barnsley with Refined Robotics.
Both announcements shrink the humanoid story to tasks that already have budgets: ingredient sorting on a food line and stair capable parcel drops. Neither vendor waited for a general purpose biped that can do laundry and factory rework on the same chassis.

Why it matters
Opinion: The humanoid category is being priced twice. Investors fund full body platforms on 2030 general autonomy narratives, while operators fund semi humanoids on 2026 line items they already understand: last mile augmentation and food plant sorting.
Neubility's CEO said the priority is fastest commercialization, not replicating every human motion. That is the correct procurement filter. Buyers who delay automation until general purpose humanoids arrive will lose years of yield data to competitors running narrower pilots.
Who is affected
Warehouse and plant automation leads evaluating humanoid RFPs; venture investors holding full stack humanoid equity; municipal logistics offices tempted by legged delivery demos; cobot vendors deciding whether to add manipulation stacks.
What to do next
Rewrite humanoid business cases around one measurable task per site, with a 12 month pilot KPI, instead of a general labor replacement model.
What to watch
CJ CheilJedang public metrics on Billy sorting accuracy; Evri intervention rates on bipedal routes; whether T Robotics and other national humanoid grants produce factory invoices before 2027.
