XPeng Robotics Raises 900 Million Dollars to Scale IRON Humanoids

Chinese electric vehicle maker XPeng said its robotics unit closed more than 900 million dollars in financing at a post money valuation above 6.3 billion dollars, the largest single private round it claims in China's embodied AI sector.

The August 24 announcement lands weeks before XPeng targets mass production of its IRON humanoid. Chief executive He Xiaopeng took direct control of the robotics business in June 2026, describing a pivot from smart EV maker to physical AI company.

IRON's production bet

IRON debuted at XPeng AI Day in November 2025. The seventh generation prototype runs on Turing chips shared with the company's cars, includes more than 60 joints, a five degree of freedom spine, and soft tissue inspired actuation marketed as bionic muscle fascia. An eighth generation unit is earmarked for the factory line.

XPeng plans monthly capacity above 1,000 units by the end of 2026. Initial deployments will serve as showroom guides and campus hosts before broader China and overseas deliveries in 2027. The company has floated a 2030 goal of one million units annually, an order of magnitude beyond today's humanoid shipments industry wide.

The funding coincides with a corporate restructure. Robotics intellectual property and staff will move into a standalone subsidiary over 18 months while XPeng retains about 82 percent ownership, keeping results consolidated but giving investors a separate valuation marker.

Why automakers think they can scale robots

XPeng's pitch mirrors other car groups entering humanoids: reuse manufacturing discipline, battery supply chains, and in house silicon. The firm reported 103,295 vehicle deliveries in the second quarter of 2026, up 64.8 percent quarter over quarter, evidence it can build hardware at volume even as profitability remains pressured.

Competitors are moving on similar calendars. BYD, Apptronik, and Neura Robotics have raised large rounds targeting 2026 production windows. Tesla's Optimus program, by contrast, has slipped relative to early 2025 rhetoric, which XPeng explicitly referenced in investor facing materials.

Risks on the factory floor

No IRON units ship commercially yet. Prior public demos drew skepticism after viewers questioned whether a human hid inside the costume; He responded on stage by cutting open a leg to show wiring. Mass production requires reliability, service networks, and tasks beyond choreography.

XPeng also described the round as a first funding for a restructured entity after a 2022 Series A under the Pengxing Intelligence name, so headline comparisons to earlier raises need nuance.

Still, 900 million dollars is a concrete bet that humanoids exit expo halls in 2026. If IRON hits even a fraction of the stated capacity, it would mark one of the first automaker scale humanoid lines in China.
