Demis Hassabis on Stepping Back From Day-to-Day DeepMind to Shape AGI

The pivot

Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai and Demis Hassabis published a joint leadership note in early August 2026 that reshuffled Google DeepMind's day-to-day chain of command. Hassabis is stepping back from operational leadership to become Chair of Google DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet, while Koray Kavukcuoglu — DeepMind's CTO and Google's Chief AI Architect — moves up to SVP of Google DeepMind, reporting directly to Pichai.

Why now

Hassabis framed the transition around proximity to artificial general intelligence.

He described the moment as historically pivotal:

Pichai echoed that framing, writing that he and Hassabis had long discussed "a role that allows him to put his full attention on actively shaping the future of AGI."

What changes operationally

Under the new structure, Kavukcuoglu owns Gemini model development, frontier AI research, and the Gemini app and developer teams. Hassabis will remain closely connected to Kavukcuoglu and other DeepMind leaders, advising across models and research from Google's London offices.

Hassabis said he is handing over day-to-day operational responsibilities "so that I have the time and space to focus on the big picture and help influence what is to come to the best of my ability." He expressed confidence in Kavukcuoglu, noting a 13-year working relationship and crediting him with early breakthroughs including WaveNet and DQN.

Hassabis also emphasized that Gemini remains "in good hands" and cited progress on unreleased models, including references to Gemini 4 in his memo.

Isomorphic Labs and health

Hassabis will continue leading Isomorphic Labs, the AI drug-discovery company spun out of DeepMind. He said he plans to "lean into" that role further:

I've always believed the No.1 application of AI should be to improve human health. It's time for AI to prove its unequivocal value to the world, and what better way to demonstrate that than to help finally cure diseases like cancer.

That line connects Google's AGI strategy to a concrete application domain — computational biology — where Hassabis already holds an executive mandate separate from Gemini product cycles.

Context inside Google

Pichai's memo highlighted commercial momentum: Gemini Flash demand, a live Cyber model, and Gemma downloads surpassing 900 million. The reorg arrives alongside other high-profile departures, including Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat leaving to launch the public-benefit startup Discovery Loop, which Google said it will back as a founding investor and cloud partner.

Industry coverage characterized Hassabis's move as strategic rather than an exit: he retains board-level influence at DeepMind while Kavukcuoglu runs the engineering organization that ships models to Search, Cloud, and the Gemini consumer app.

What Hassabis wants the field to hear

Reading the public memo as a whole, three themes stand out:
