Agility Robotics is positioning Digit v5 as the first humanoid designed for cooperative safety: working in close proximity to people without permanent safety fencing. In an August 10, 2026 Forbes/Yahoo piece drawing on Agility Chief Business Officer Daniel Diez, the company said early customer deployments of v5 are planned to begin in December 2026.

That claim arrives as Agility prepares to go public through a $2.5 billion merger with Churchill Capital Corp XI (ticker AGLT), with more than $620 million in expected gross proceeds and over $300 million in multi-year Digit v5 orders subject to contractual milestones.

Why cooperative safety is the bottleneck

Diez told Forbes that misconceptions about humanoids focus on dexterity or AI, when the harder problem is regulatory and operational: most factory humanoids today run behind cages, consuming floor space and blocking workflows.

It's probably the biggest misconception that what's holding back these robots are skills or AI or batteries. The truth of the matter is what holds back large-scale deployments of humanoid robots is their inability to work outside of safety parameters or safety cages.

Digit v5 combines upgraded perception — cameras and sensors with algorithms to detect people — with hardware Agility says can react without dropping payloads. Diez cited cycloidal actuators in hips and knees that let the robot recover when disturbed, including tests where engineers "literally pull the rug out from under Digit."

Agility's near-term commercial focus remains bulk material handling in factories and warehouses — "dull, dirty, dangerous" jobs with high turnover. Diez pointed to a Schaeffler plant in South Carolina where Digit v4 already outpaces an industrial washer's ingest rate, arguing throughput beats raw walking speed.

If the SPAC closes as planned in 2026, Agility would become among the first U.S.-listed pure-play humanoid vendors reporting real deployment financials. Diez framed the listing as accountability in a sector crowded with demo reels: Agility cites 65,000+ operating hours across nine customer sites and names customers including GXO, Toyota, and Mercado Libre.

Digit v5 specifications from Agility's SEC investor materials include roughly 50 lb (22.7 kg) payload — a 40% increase over v4 — and about 22 hours of operation per charge, with a reach up to 7.2 ft (2.1 m).

What remains unproven

Cooperative safety is a marketing threshold until insurers, unions, and site safety teams sign off at scale. Agility's December timeline is an early-customer start, not proof that cage-free humanoids work across retail, pharma, or other verticals Diez mentioned.

Still, if v5 delivers, it attacks the deployment tax that has kept humanoids physically separated from the labor they are meant to augment — and that is a different problem than another backflip video.
